This Journey of Courage…

The Christian life is a journey. And,  just when I think I have it figured out, something makes me realize that I have A LONG way to go (still).

I’ve been teaching about courage A LOT lately and we started out by saying courage always starts at the edge of our comfort zone.  I don’t know if that’s the best way to put it…

Maybe the best way to say it is this – Courage starts at the end of ourselves.  Courage starts at the end of our ability to control situations, to manipulate circumstances, to control outcomes. We talk about this line – this line where we are warm and comfortable on one side, and uncomfortable on the other. Safe on one side and unsafe on the other.

Could it be true that ultimately the only way the Christian life is experienced, truly experienced is on the risky side of that line?

Isn’t it true that the only place prayer matters is on the courage out-of-control side of that line?  Yes. It’s the place where my dependence on God matters.

Maybe that’s what Jesus meant in Matthew 10:39 when He said,  “Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

Live in that for a while and let’s ask ourselves what side of the line we are living most of our lives on.

Be careful – that’s a dangerous question and it won’t lead you to safe and comfortable places. This week, this moment, let’s scoot to the edge – to the edge of ourselves and take one big, risky, courageous step forward! How fun it will be to do that together…
